President's Message
This season the 1st XV of Reading RFC will be playing in SW1. The squad has inevitably undergone several changes since last season but perhaps surprisingly, appears to be of a similar strength to last season's and may even gel into a stronger one. We are therefore looking for an early return to the National Leagues. Alistair McHarg is continuing as our Director of Rugby and given the high level of support from the squad, that he deserves he should produce a strong team that is capable of delivering our hopes and expectations. This season we have more friendlies before the league programme begins and that should mean we start our first league match with a team that has settled down into a cohesive unit. To help the players we can all try and support them both at home and away. If those thinking that they might follow the team to away matches can identify themselves to me I'll circulate details of travel arrangements where appropriate. May I suggest to all members from all sections of the club that as well as supporting the section that brought them to the club they occasionally watch the activities of other sections.
The Ladies team continues to flourish and it is encouraging to see more women coming forward to serve on the Executive Committee.
The Wanderers should benefit from a strong first team and the thirds and Rhinos teams will continue to provide social rugby as required. The mini and colt squads look set to continue the progress made in recent years.
Let us make an effort to increase support for the Ladies, wanderers, mini and colts; they all play entertaining rugby and many of them support the 1st XV regularly.
As in previous years there will be a lunch before most home league and cup matches for the 1st XV. While these meals are obviously aimed at 1st XV supporters other members will be most welcome and outside firms and associations can sponsor the match and book a table for eight. These lunches are also attractive to firms and associations wanting to run a "bonding" session. Firms and associations wishing to sponsor a match and /or book a table should contact Craig Hunter - craig@chunter.eclipse.co.uk - for details.
Best wishes
Keith Dugdale
